Welcome. I am here to offer a resource to therapists, students, and the general public that I wish I would have had first when I was a teen struggling with big emotions, a young-adult trying to find her place in the world, and most recently when I dove head-first into the world of DBT as a student therapist. Now, after countless trainings, hours spent pouring over the DBT Skills Manual, and much practice making these skills a part of my everyday, I am here to offer instructional videos that (1) educate you on each of the core DBT skills, (2) show you how to practice each of the skills, and (3) provide guidance on how to implement these skills into your everyday lives.
This project is my passion & I am grateful to have my colleague, friend, & fellow DBT-nerd, Sam Jacobson, here to help me bring the skills to you in a way that is accessible. We may welcome other mental health professionals, DBT-nerds, and random others to this space as we go, and we hope that you will join us on a weekly basis as we work our way through the core DBT skills.
Each video will include a mindfulness practice, didactic session to teach you the skill, practice of the skill using our very real problems, and instruction on how to practice the skill over the next week. Our goal is to keep these brief (~15-minutes) and I write this after filming our first video, which ended up running 30 minutes due to doing a meaningful WISE MIND that we had no desire to cut short. That said, we will work to keep these concise and will identify at which time stamp the mindfulness, didactic, practice, and homework instruction are so you can skip to the part you need most.
Whether you are in the mental health field or just looking for a way to live a more effective life, I suggest you watch one of these a week and dedicate space to implementing these skills in the week subsequent to learning the skill. Please also consider having the DBT Skills Manual available so that you can follow along as we go (it is available on Amazon or free here: https://survivingcptsd.files.wordpress.com/2018/01/dbt_skills_training_handouts_and_worksheets_-_linehan_marsha_srg_.pdf).
Lastly, please note that these videos are not at all meant to replace therapy. They are meant to be a helpful resource to compliment the hard work that you are already doing in treatment. If, in moving through these videos, feel it is a good time to get more support, please reach out. I am happy to discuss working with you or guide you in your search for a therapist that will be a good fit.
If you have feedback on these videos or want us to cover a particular topic or skill, please reach out to me at sydney.r.counseling@gmail.com. These videos are for you and we welcome your feedback.
